The government is thinking about tightening up the rules on motorcycle helmets.
Most riders agree you should have a DOT-approved helmet no matter when you ride.
This week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters proposed rules to strengthen the tests that helmets must pass to get Department of Transportation (DOT) approval.
The department wants new tamper-proof DOT labels on helmets to cut down on the number of novelty helmets, which aren't much more than plastic without padded protection.
In some states adult motorcycle riders are required to wear helmets, and Zamora says too often people throw on non-tested novelty helmets because they're lightweight and look cool.
I have ridden motorcycles for many years now and I think helmets are a good idea. On a recent trip to California , a state that mandates helmets, I saw many riders wearing "novelty helmets." What a joke. If the state is going to require helmets, make sure it is something that is going to make a difference.
Here in Utah adults are not required to wear helmets. If you don't that is your choice, albeit not a very good one. I know that the open air feels great but I have seen what happens when you don't wear a helmet. I like my fellow riders but feel bad each time they contact or hire me because they were involved in a crash or wreck, almost always caused by someone else.
